Is it Transmission or CV Axle/differential?
Hi my 1998 Ford Escort has been acting bad lately. The transmission is shifting with pulls and clunks and such. I CANNOT put my foot hard on the gas or when the transmission wants to go into passing/overdrive gear it lets out a horrible screaming gringing sound… Lately the car has been feeling really heavy and something is grinding. I looked online and saw it could be a few things. Differential Axle transmission etc…any thoughts/ideas?
sounds like the transmission. CV shafts will make a popping sound when they are going bad, usually when turning. The shafts will not make your car feel ‘heavy’ or grind unless they are about to come apart. Look at the rubber boots on each end of the shaft–95% of the time, if the boots are ripped, the shaft is about shot due to the lube being gone from the shaft ends. If the boots are in good shape, the only other source is the transmission itself.
