Micargi manufactures everything from freestyles bikes to beach cruisers. The China based company operates an office and warehouse in the United States. Micargi bikes are manufactured within ISO standards. On the more affordable end, prices for women’s cruiser bikes from this maker range from the low 100s to mid-300s, though pricing competition tends to knock that down a bit. If you go for a lower priced seller, make sure they operate their own warehouse and shipping. The quality controls can be beneficial. Lots of people go into the drop-ship business with cruisers and other kinds of bikes with no assurance of quality or customer service to speak of.
Felt is a highly respected name in the bicycle and fitness supplies industry. Their women’s cruiser bikes are popular according to online reviews, and they sure look cool. They’re pricier, but you get a lot of “mileage” out of these gorgeously designed cruisers that are lightweight and provide the best in function and form. You get top brake hubs, tires, aluminum frame, saddle and more. It’s worth it to shop around for a good deal on these, but expect to pay what they’re worth. Again, look for a reliable dealer and not just a guy processing drop ship orders from his apartment.
Firmstrong is a hopeful name for a bike… but seriously, this is a nice lower mid-priced cruiser with classic appeal. Built to be high-performance and low-maintenance, this bike will get you there in safety and style…and with dual-coil spring seats, cruising is pretty comfy.
Manhattan is a beach cruiser you’ll want to take along on road trips simply because it’s so incredibly charming. If you are all about vintage style and retro splash, this may be for you. Look to pay in the mid to upper 300 for the Deluxe that comes with a 6-speed gear, traditional ladies’ frame, retro chainguard (neat-o!) and Silver Anodized alloy rims that help you show off just enough. Just want to say here that this manufacturer totally makes the most of a great opportunity: Why even build a beach cruiser if you aren’t going to give it some panache? Nice work, Manhattan.
Torker is another company that is all about excellent design that performs. Get your 3-speed cruiser or what they call the Boardwalk Step-Thru and plan on super comfortable cruising along the shore. Very pretty too and priced at mid-range.
A few other manufacturers to look for are Greenline, Phat Cycles, and Sun. Features to pay attention to, whether you go the Felt or the Torker route, are the seat, shocks, rims, frame, pedals, frame-length, tire size, and, of course, color! Finally, if it hasn’t been said enough already in this article: look for a dealer you can trust. Once you have your bike, you’ll want a person on the other end of the phone who is interested in keeping your business and building a good rep. Call around to speak with dealers if you’re shopping online and even if you plan to save by buying off the Web, it can’t hurt to take a test drive at a dealership near you. Happy cruising.
