The strength and beauty of a bicycle comes from the kind of frame it is mounted on. Basically, apart from the paint, nothing else is superficial. Every bicycle component is contributing to the purpose and performance of the ride.
In order to pay particular attention to the frame, we should be, knowing enough to understand size, symmetry and materials so as to get the right frame that fits us, our riding style, and purpose.
The design of the bike frame has not changed over the years, but the materials that have gone on in the making have immensely contributed in evolving bicycle performances. Obviously, the bikes have tremendously improved.
The Grand Bicycle Ride
They were made in steel earlier, and came as very heavy. We have nothing now, compared to what we used to have. The heavy frames came with laid back angles, and with long wheel bases. Even steel bicycle frames progressively got lighter by making the tubes thinner, and joining them without using lugs.
Bicycle frames revolutionized when alloy tubes came into the picture. These started making for very responsive and light but sturdy frames. The tubes however had to be made bigger, but could however be made into various aerodynamic shapes.
Most people now go for alloy bicycle frames, often combining with carbon forks, carbon chain and seat stays in some cases. If you did not want to spend a couple of thousand dollars on your bicycle, alloy wheel frames is your best choice.
When money is not the criteria, titanium or carbon fiber frame would probably make the best choice. These frames are much more expensive, but a good one can definitely last a life-time. Bikes made out of titanium almost feel weightless, but are able to give a nice, tight ride.
Mix and Match – Bicycle Parts
Mixing titanium main tubes with carbon forks and backend give a superb combination for handling and comfort. An all carbon frame however seems to be what everyone wants, but only few can afford.
We would basically buy the best bicycle frame that we can afford, add the right bicycle parts, and see that they fit well. Fit is where we can say, if it is all right for the rider, or all wrong.
Getting the Right Bike Size
The most basic element of sizing a bike frame is commonly referred to as its height. This measurement is the length of the frame from the center of the Bottom Bracket to the top of the top tube.
To begin with, we will first need to get an accurate measurement of our inseam. A road bike frame’s height is normally thought to be ideal if it is 67% of our inseam length. A mountain bike is however ridden on a much smaller frame.
The exact size of a mountain bike is most affected by the amount of downhill riding that we have to do. Frame sizes are affected by the unique configurations of our body, and which can be accommodated by differences in frame geometry, top tube length, seat post height, and/or saddle angles, handlebar width, and slant, or even crank length.
