HERE’S A BOXFUL OF TIPS FOR PACKING AND STORAGE
There are some people who spend their lives collecting stuff, and there are others who live without. But even if you’re not the collecting kind, you’re probably still likely to need a storage facility sometime in your life.
Whether you’re on the move, uncluttering your home or in a transition phase in your life… whatever your needs, self-storage can be a very practical and convenient way to store your ‘stuff’.
By taking a little time in the planning stages of packing and storage, you can eliminate much of the hassle and angst. Follow this simple guide to easy packing and storage which will also help you find something in a hurry if you need to !
GENERAL TIPS
* Look for butcher’s paper or unprinted newspaper for wrapping items, as newsprint can soil your things
• Take photographs of valuable items for insurance purposes
* Certified copies of all your vital documents should be held by a third party
• If packing house contents, try and pack room by room and store the room contents close together
• Have a designated ‘necessities’ box which can be unpacked first and which contains vital items such as adapter plugs, screwdriver, remote controls for TVs etc, a set of linen for each bed that will need to be made up on the first night, torch, candle
BOXES
• Boxes should be uniform in size (boxes that are too big will become too heavy)
* Clearly label all boxes.Another way of doing it is to number the boxes and keep a detailed list of what’s in them.Another suggestion from a Perth self storage company is to pack room by room and label the boxes for each room with different coloured labels eg. yellow labels for kitchen, blue for study etc.
* Pop a few napthalene balls or similar insect repellant into each box
• Seal boxes completely with packing tape
• Stack boxes with the labels facing OUT !
* To avoid items (furniture, boxes) from absorbing moisture from the concrete floor, place them on pallets
OTHER ITEMS
* To avoid damaging the spines of books, pack them flat into boxes
* Avoid storing mirrors, paintings etc flat – they should be on their side to protect the glass
* Take batteries out of any battery operated item
• Silver should be wrapped in non-acidic tissue paper to prevent tarnishing
* All metal, cast iron or chrome items (eg bikes, lawnmowers etc) should be wiped down with a rag and a few drops of machine oil to prevent rust
* Gas bottles should be emptied and petrol and other flammable liquids drained from machinery, cars
• Fridges and freezers should be thoroughly cleaned and dried before storing.During storage, the doors should be left slightly ajar
• Clothing and curtains should be hung on hangers if possible
FURNITURE
• Stand sofas and mattresses on their end
• Remove table legs if possible – otherwise stack tables upside down.
* Remove the keys from any doors, draws etc. to the inside of the item
PACKING THE STORAGE UNIT
* Keep a central aisle open to enable easy access
* Items that you may be likely to need should be stored at the front of the unit, easily accessible
* Store valuable items at the back
* Shelving can also be a good idea to create more space
* Put a dust cover made from cotton or a light plastic sheet over everything
