Review Of The Kona Dew Range Of Street Hybrid Bikes
Kona is well known for style, and the Kona Dew range of street hybrid bikes have that in abundance.
Primarily aimed and fitted out for street riding – commuting to work, or out-and-about on the lanes at the weekend – they will also let you explore paths and gentle trails when you want, which is what hybrid bike riding is all about. How do the various models compare?
All have frames constructed from Kona’s 7005 aluminium. The sloping top tube has two advantages – a safe standover clearance and all models are unisex. There is some variation in frame geometry from model to model depending on the design aims. All will take mudguards – probably essential on a commuting bike.
They all run on 700 mm road (rather than MTB) wheels, and all except the FS suspension model carry Kona’s own Project Two aluminium fork. All have triple chainsets for maximum versatility – useful ranges for hills and cruising.
Apart from the features in common, the different models show improvements in gears, brakes and wheelsets as you go up the range.
Entry-level model is the Kona Dew City.
- 21 gears, Shimano components including EZFire shifters.
- Tektro V-brakes. Powerful and simple to maintain.
- Comfort saddle, 35 mm tyres and flat pedals all make for a practical, no-nonsense bike.
- Very competitive price.
The original Kona Dew is the next bike in the range. It is identical to the Dew City in most respects. However there are
- 24 gears in three slightly wider ranges.
- Slightly better front gear mech and wheel rims.
- More heavy-duty V-brakes, although still Tektro.
- All this adds up to a very practical bike suitable for nearly all situations.
Next up the range is the Kona Dew Plus. Changes to the brakes is the major upgrade to this model.
- Hydraulic disc brakes from Shimano for better stopping power and wet-weather performance.
- Improved rear derailleur to Shimano Deore for more smoothness and reliability.
Moving up the range we come to the Kona Dew Deluxe.
- The upgrade to a 9-Speed Cassette now gives you 27 gears.
- Upgrades to the quality of the front derailleur, the shifters, the rims and the brakes.
- The frame now features a beautifully tapered top tube.
- The tyres are narrower – 32mm – which would give better road performance, although maybe less versatility off-road.
The Kona Dew FS is the only model in the range to feature suspension.
- The front fork is changed to a Suntour suspension unit, great for smoothing out the ruts.
- More shock-absorption comes from the suspension seatpost.
- Modifications to the frame with more slope given to the top tube.
- Slightly lower gear ratios from some smaller chainrings.
- Better shifting between chainrings from a better front derailleur
- Great value for a suspension bike.
The Kona Dr Dew is a bike designed with no compromise for fast street riding and commuting.
- Project Two aluminium fork, and incorporating the tapered-tube frame.
- Shimano hydraulic disc brakes for all-weather performance.
- The use of more Shimano road bike components, from the Sora range, demonstrate that this is a bike built for road performance.
- The wheel rims are sleeker, as is the saddle.
- Improved handlebars and pedals.
- There’s no doubt that the eye-catching graphics and paintwork will turn plenty of heads.
Such is the choice available in the Kona Dew range that there is a bike for everybody here, and at great prices too.
