The Flatland BMX Bike
Ever since its inception in the early 1970s, BMX riding has evolved into a number of different methods mainly due to the “freestyling” skills of its pioneers. This area of steady advancement has endeared the sport to many. But just like any creative sport having its own sanctioning body, just like figure skating, gymnastics, driving or slam dunk competitions, categories have to be set and rules implemented while creativity remains inspired and perfect execution targeted.
Thus, freestyle BMX or stunt riding now features five disciplines: street, park, vert, trails/dirt jump and flatland.
Flatland BMX is often a riding style executed on smooth flat surfaces sans the ramps, jumps or grind rails. A nice expression to put it will be “a way of inspired cycling having a mixture of breakdancing and encompassing particular areas of fighting techinques and Zen meditation as the discipline.”
Most flatlanders would commonly be very dedicated to refining their flatland tactics, not like the riders of other disciplines who can switch from street to part to dirt jump and vert at any moment. One of the main reasons for this is actually the lowered stability of handling smaller bikes on ramps, dirt and street; yet the shorter wheelbase makes it easier to help them to spin or stand the bike on a single wheel.
