Mountain bikes are not just for riding in the mountains. They are so versatile and comfortable that they have become some of the most popular bikes in the world, even for people who just want something for casual riding.
There is an enormous range of mountain bikes to choose from. In fact, it can get very confusing. Aside from the major brands, there are many smaller labels that have set themselves apart as manufacturers of high quality, race worthy bikes. Diamondback bikes, for example, built their reputation on bikes built for hardcore BMX and mountain bike riders.
The quality of these bikes is reflected in their price tags. The most expensive ones feature aluminum or even carbon fiber frames and are as light as a feather. They have the most advanced gearing and breaking systems and offer virtually flawless stopping power and can shift gears smoothly under any conditions. While you may not need one of these dream bikes, if you can afford one, you will love it.
You can also choose between a number of suspension options. Some come with no suspension at all. Others, called ‘hardtails, ‘ have only front suspension. Still others come with front and Rear Suspension. While full-suspension bikes used to be expensive, they are now common and can be very inexpensive.
When it comes to buying mountain bike accessories, one thing you can’t go without is a flashing rear warning light. The good ones are highly visible. It’s no exaggeration to say that they could save your life. Other popular accessories include odometers and speedometers and handy toolkits for on the road repairs.
Most people think that bike riding is only good for building muscle in the legs, but that is not entirely true. When you’ve spent a couple of hours pulling on the handlebars for uphill climbs, you will have built upper body as well as lower body strength. Overall muscle growth is very important for serious riders.
If you want to starting riding a mountain bike for fitness, do yourself a favor and invest in a good quality bike. The cheaper ones are fine for cruising around on, but if you want a workout, a good quality bike will be able to do whatever you want it to do and more.
Really, a mountain bike is probably the best fitness investment you could ever make. While your bicycle may cost more than other types of fitness equipment, you will use it far more often and it will always double as an enjoyable form of transportation.
