Scott Sportster Range Part 1
The Scott Sportster range is extensive, and can appear a little daunting to get your head around at first sight. In this first part we take a look at the lowest priced models in the range – the Sportster 60, 55, 50 and 40.
First off, it’s useful to point out that the higher specification models have the lower model numbers, and vice versa. So therefore the Sportster 60 is the entry-level model, and the 40 the highest-spec bike in this group.
All four are available in mens and womens versions – each version of a particular model differing in:-
· Frame geometry.
· Handlebar – more bend in the womens version.
· Saddle – for obvious reasons…
Everything else – components, weight, price etc is identical between the mens and womens versions of each model. The main variations between models come down to different specifications of front fork, geartrain, and brakes.
All Scott Sportster bikes are built around the same 6061 aluminium frame. The beautifully tapered top and down tubes are very eyecatching. All the tubing is double butted for strength. The paint finish and graphics look fantastic. The frame will take mudguards and rack if you wish.
Sportster 60. This is the range’s basic model. It’s the only model to have a steel fork. The geartrain components are all basic Shimano Tourney and Acera.. Thee are 21 gears on this model, selected with EZ Fire shifters by Shimano. These are simple to use, clicking up and down the gears using the thumb and forefinger levers, the selected gear being shown in the indicator window. The shifters are integrated with the brake levers, operating Scott’s own V-brakes.
The handlebars on the womens bikes are some 10mm longer and have a bit more bend, but both are aluminium. The saddles also differ, but are of the same quality as those fitted to the rest of the range, so again there is no compromise on quality.
The semi-slick tyres are ideal for hybrid riding. At 37mm they are wide enough and have enough grip for off-road riding, but at the same time low rolling resistance for on the road.
The pedals are flat, and together with the chainguard are an acknowledgement that most peoples’ cycling will be done in normal clothes and shoes.
Weighing 12.4 kg, this is not as light as some, but it carries quality components and is robust enough to withstand anything you can subject it to. It’s a great value bike – and it’s Scott too.
Sportster 50. This is the next step up. In nearly all aspects this is the same as the 60. Frame, brakes, handlebars, wheels and tyres are all the same. Two major upgrades mark this model out. The first is the suspension fork at the front, which will greatly improve performance and comfort off road. The second is the 8-Speed Cassette – there’s no change to the derailleurs, but you now get 24 gears. The bike also has better pedals fitted.
At 13.2 kg the 50 is a bit heavier than the 60, due to the forks. However I think that for a small increase in price, the upgrades to fork and gears are excellent value.
Sportster 55. The next bike in the range shows only one change compared to the 50 – the brakes. The 55 has mechanical disc brakes by Shimano in place of the V-brakes fitted to the other models. Disc brakes will be particularly useful as they keep the braking surfaces out of the mud and grit. Otherwise the 55 shares the same components as the 50. For very little more, the Disc Brake upgrade is again excellent value if that is the sort of riding you plan to do.
Sportster 40. In the same way as the 55 is more suitable for off road riding, so the 40 will appeal more to those who do most of their cycling on the road. An improved suspension fork, together with narrower 35mm tyres are both better suited to road riding. Both gear mechs are better quality. A 9-speed cassette now gives the bike 27 gears. The 40 loses the discs in favour of V-brakes again, resulting in a significant saving in weight. Don’t forget though that this bike is still able to take you off road quite happily.
There’s a bit of a jump in price as a result of these upgrades. However, this is a performance bike and you would go a long way to find this sort of quality for the money. It’s fantastic value.
So I hope you can see in this Scott Sportster review that there is huge variety, the bike for you depending on what you want to spend, and the sort of riding you plan to do.
