SIDI Diablo GTX Winter MTB Shoe
Mountain biking isn’t specifically for those sunny days when the temperature is 60 degrees and the thought of winter is almost completed erased. Mountain biking should also be about getting wet and muddy. The Sidi Diablo GTX is ready to ride hard and get put away wet. The SIDI Diablo GTX features an insulated, waterproof Gore-Tex upper that keeps feet warm and dry no matter how bad the weather gets. The slightly roomier fit accommodates a heavier winter sock as well as Sidi Toasters. Four Velcro straps keep your feet secure, and Sidi’s Competition sole accommodates optional toe spikes.
Here’s an interesting fact. When pro riders get to choose the brand of cycling shoes they use, more professional cyclists choose Sidi than all other brands. Combined. Or here’s another one. What’s the #1 shoe brand among bike shop employees when they have to buy those shoes out of their own hard-earned paychecks? Sidi again.
One thing that Sidi shoes are famous for is their gorgeous slipper-like comfort, from the very first turn of the pedal right through to the last one. However, we’d struggle to apply that to the Diablo winter boot. They’re not so uncomfortable that you can’t wear them, but they’re not exactly luxurious, either.
They’re also not the warmest shoes to wear in very cold weather, either. The slim, racy looks come at the expense of some of the thicker insulation that Northwave and Shimano cram into their uppers.
However, the Sidi Diablo GTX is the most waterproof boot of the three. We rode the boots for a month through trough-like trails, and always had bone-dry socks at the end — which is important when you’re going on all-day epics in this weather.
Like the Northwave, the top cuff isn’t that watertight, but it’s better than the Northwave’s so is slightly better at keeping water out.
One thing worth mentioning, especially if you intend to ride trails that you’re expecting to be littered with roots and rocks, is that the Diablo forgoes Sidi’s SRS sole (which uses grippy rubber tread lugs) in favour of the old plastic type. These grip okay over grass and mud, but are very slippery on wet roots and rocks.

- Gore-Tex Lining
Gore-tex is king when it comes to outdoor gear. It’s waterproof, durable and breathable and makes an excellent lining on the Sidi Diablo GTX. The internal gusset protects from the cold and water when the conditions turn nasty or the weather is very humid. - Durable Upper
Sidi manufacturers the Diablo with synthetic uppers ensuring years of use under tough conditions. The upper and toe is made of “transpiring” fabric with reinforced toe inserts.
