The following is a list of ideas that can be incorporated into a lesson plan for young children, using black and white colour as the theme.
1. Look at a book of colours and look at each colour except for black and white. See if they can tell you which colours are missing. Talk about what you think of when you see black. Encourage the children to share how they feel about darkness and the contrast between black and white. They may associate it with fear or worry. You could ask them how they could deal with their fears and who could help them. Why do some people prefer to only wear black, rather than bright colours? What does white indicate? How can it be spoiled?
2. Play a black and white game. Divide the children into two teams and give each a box of black and white everyday items (about the same number as children in each team). At the other end of the room, each team has one black container and one white. On “Go” the children race one at a time with an item from the box and put it into one of the appropriate boxes at the other end of the room. The next child doesn’t go until the first child has returned to the starting line. The first team to place all items correctly wins.
3. Set up a corner of the room where you are making shadows, using a spotlight shining onto a white cloth/sheet. Make shapes with your hands behind the cloth, such as butterflies, birds etc and see if the children can guess what they are. When they answer correctly, they could go behind the cloth and make shapes for the others to guess.
You could even turn it into a shadow theatre and tell a story.
4. Black and white clothes could be worn for the session and a prize given for the most original outfit.
5. Read the story “Funnybones” by Janet and Allan Ahlberg and get the children to act out the actions where possible, e.g. going to the park, feeding the ducks, playing on the swings etc. This could precede the talk in idea number 1. Where appropriate throughout the story, you could intersperse a song, sung to the tune of “Hickory dickory dock” as follows: What’s the weather today, what’s the weather today, it’s cold and wet, cold and wet, what’s the weather today. Let’s put on our wellington boots…..let’s go to the park…..let’s now feed the ducks…..etc.
6. Black and White Colour Crafts, such as:
- Paint white spotty shapes using cotton buds onto black background paper.
- Make doillie snowflakes by folding a sheet of white paper several times and cutting out shapes along the folds.
- Open to see a beautiful snowflake. Stick onto black paper.
- Stick cotton wool snowmen onto black paper.
These lesson ideas can be placed into whatever order or form suits your group of children and how much time you have at your disposal. Some activities might take longer than others if they are keeping the children’s interest, whilst others might not take long before the general interest has been lost and it is best to move on.
