How do you make steel turn glossy black?
How do you make solid steel turn glossy black, even if its struck by something. I am trying to build a Black Knights Plate Mail and stuck as when I heat the metal and expose it to more coal it makes it brittle. Trying to get the actual metal glossy black not just the surface.
I forged some cabinet hardware and got it black by heating it red hot and dropping it in some used motor oil. It does catch on fire, so you need a lid for your oil. I got some scale, but it was all flat black. I imagine you could buff it out with steel wool and/or auto body sandpaper to get a shine.
Another good choice might be appliance epoxy. I primed a winch mount I made for my jeep, then hit it with the ACE hardware applance epoxy, and it is pretty stout. Definately better than a high gloss spray paint. At $8 USD a can, it should be – but it might scratch easier than the oil quenched steel.
There might be an acid that would etch it that color. I have used copper sulfate on solder and it turns it black. It is sold for use in making stained glass, and might be called patina or something like that.
The last guy I know who built his own armour wound up joining the US Marine corps. Seemed kinda appropriate.
