How can i fix my car if power steering fluid has been put in it instead of brake fluid?
My mum has an Audi A4 and my dad has put power steering fluid in i instead of brake fluid. We have bought a new master cylinder from the breakers, what should we do next?
If you don’t know, don’t do it! These are your Brakes you’re playing with! In any case, Never use second-hand brake parts – you don’t know their history – maybe someone put steering fluid in that one, too?
But if you are determined to have a go:
First, check in the owner’s manual that the 2 fluids Are different – they probably are.
How long has the steering fluid been in there? If a few days, carry on as below; if a few weeks be prepared to change ALL seals throughout the system – a BIG job.
Buy a good workshop manual (Haynes?), the right tools and lots of brake fluid. Fit and adjust the new cylinder and flush the system through, draining off at least 250ml at each bleed valve. Discard what you drain out. The next day, do the same flush-through again. For the next 6 months check the fluid level every week and if it drops at all, find the leak immediately. Be safe.
