Is it possible to apply a paint to an inner tube (like a bike inner tube made out of butyl rubber)?
If so, what kind of paint do I need? I also need the paint to be able stretch with the rubber substrate without cracking.
It is possible, but it will take a long time to fully cure and difficult to paint. You will have to take it to a reputable body shop that uses high quality paint like DuPont or Speiz Hecker. Ask them to paint it single stage (if it is a solid color) and to add at least 50% flex agent. They will probably need to paint it inflated and then deflate it right after painting. Adding this much flex agent will keep it from cracking, but it will take a few months for it to fully cure. But it will work. These companies say that they’re paint will stick to shower curtains and footballs and not crack.
