Is there a good rule of thumb for when to connect the shielding of a cable to one end vs. both ends?
We are trying to figure out how to shield a cable consisting of a group of twisted shielded conductors.
If you are using the cable as mic cords then both ends are always connected. For an XLR connectors pin 1 shield, pin 2 (red or white) non inverting, pin 3 (black) inverting. If you need a ground lifted then use an adapter where pin 1 in not through.
If you are using cables to interconnect two pieces of equipment then the ground is lifted at the receive end. This is done to isolate grounds. If one piece of equipment has one ground and a second has a different ground then when you connect then together you could get a ground loop. You can often hear ground loops as a low frequency hum in speaker feeds.
Ideally both pieces of equipment should have the same ground (earth ground not power company ground), but life doesn’t always happen that way.
