Cannondale Coda vs. Shimano Deore LX?
I’m working on my old Cannondale and it has a Coda “ceramic” crank in Good Condition. I also have a Shimano Deore LX crank in similar condition. Any thoughts on which is the better crank to use (I realize both cranks are not high end)? Thanks!
I don’t know about the ceramic models of Coda….that’s new to me. I have seen several square-taper Coda cranks split at the hole, however, which doesn’t make me feel great about them. That was a common problem for several brands of square-hole mtb cranks from back in the day and the best you can hope for is that you don’t flay open your calf muscle on the bb spindle if one over does blow out on you. I lost the left arm on a Kooka crankset and the right arm on an early Race Face….I’m thankful that neither incident caused me to crash and/or bleed.
I’d use whichever one you like, unless the LX has octalink splines, in which case I’d pick that instead. Or just choose the one that matches your scheme on the bike.

If you’re in the market for new cranks sometime, there are usually plenty of deals on closeouts. Most of the newer cranks are stiffer and lighter than ones from 6 or 15 years ago, and the majority of them use a splined interface of some sort that is better for easy installation/removal as well as long term durability of the crankarm. A $20 Bottom Bracket and a $40-$65 set of cranks can be a nice, cheap upgrade over old parts if you have the spare cash. (Actually, you’d better get two of the bottom brackets, because the cartridge desings mostly suck these days when compared to old school square taper serviceable bottom brackets. Or, just splurge for a newer “external bearing” 2-piece design…much improvement.)
