cantilever brakes?

I test rode a a 7 year old cross bike that I was thinking of buying and found that the canti brakes felt much weaker than the caliper brakes on my road bike. In fact, I could not even get the rear wheel to lock. The sellor said that it just need adjustment or possible a new cable. Then said thats the way there are made since the bike go’s offroad as well. Any truth to this? Thanks

While cantis are not the most powerful breaks you should be able to lock ‘em up. I had cantis for many years on my MTB and had no problems. They likely need cleaning, cables too. Maybe ajustment and or new pads. I would think the seller is right. They won’t be as powerful as dual pivot road breaks.

That’s the reason why they’ve been almost completely replaced with v-brakes.
