Taking your bike on holiday with Car Roof Racks
Many active people enjoy riding their bike, whether it’s in the city or in the countryside riding a bike is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise. The trouble is that we’d all prefer to ride our bikes in the countryside if we had the choice but for many city dwellers we can’t exactly ride our bikes out into the countryside as we’d be tired out before we even got there to enjoy the scenery.
This is why many people opt for bike racks on their cars, handy mounts for their bike to attached to so that the bike can be safely transported and then when you arrive at your destination you can quickly remove your bike and go for a ride.
There are quite a few options for when transporting your bike, there is attaching it to a roof rack via the built in rack mounts running down the sides of your car’s roof (not all cars have these). There is also the rear rack mount which attaches your bike on to the back of your car, depending on your car make and model you may be able to use either or only one of these racks.
The roof rack is popular as it keeps your bike out of the way of your view when driving, they are also fairly easy to mount your bike to, usually you need to remove the front wheel to secure your bike properly though. For taller vehicles this system can be more difficult as you won’t have as easy access to the bike as you would with a smaller car.
The rear rack keeps your car fairly streamlined with the bike behind as opposed to on top and disrupting the aerodynamics it will mean you won’t burn through more fuel because of increased wind resistance. The rear rack will obscure your rear vision though so you should take extra care when manoeuvring, ensuring you always use your side mirrors and check your blind spot over your shoulder.
The important thing to remember with bike racks is not to overload your car, typically your car’s manual will have recommended weight restrictions to ensure your car remains safe and responsive.
The responsiveness as well as the handling and speed will all be affected by the added weight on your vehicle so you should alter your driving to allow for this, don’t make sudden turns at speed, and keep your speed lower than usual. Before you set off on any trips also make sure your tyres are properly inflated and that your bike is totally secured, if the bike is free to wobble or move it could come loose or even cause damage to your paint or bodywork.
Finally, there are a number of high street and smaller local retailers whereby you can buy bike racks as well as there being specialist sites online. Do make sure that you buy a rack which is compatible with your car, can carry they number of bikes you need to transport (depending on family size etc) and where possible ask the seller to demonstrate how it is fitted so that you’re in the know when it comes to using it.
