Green roofing is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. Green roofs protect the roofing membrane from sunlight which normally breaks down the roofing material. As one can imagine, the roof lifespan is much greater as a result.
The concept of sustainability is becoming a major concern and many want to know how they can reduce there carbon footprints. This includes embracing clean, safe and green materials that are non toxic into our everyday lives. One way to adopt the idea of sustainability is through green roofing, this makes buildings more environmentally friendly. It’s a sure way to become sustainable leaving a large impact. Installing a cool or green roof consists of vegetation and soil, planted on top of a waterproof membrane. Green roofs act as sponges and absorb heat energy from the sun before it can harm the insides of homes and commercial properties.
The environmental advantages of green roofing are endless and include: the reduction of storm-water runoff, reduced heat island effect, the absorption of air pollution, the protection of roofing materials by vegetation, noise reduction, and great insulation from intense temperatures. The planets process of water recycling through precipitation is described as stormwater runoff. It’s natural recycling process of water ideally becomes apart of our groundwater, earthly vegetation and our Drinking Water. However, it is being destroyed when we envelop the land with buildings, roads, rail networks, and parking lots. The earth’s meadows are being replaced with roofs, concrete and asphalt; all of which harm the earth’s natural process. Green roofing specifically helps vegetation absorb water, followed by evaporation back into the air.
Stormwater runoff causes many problems with the earths air temperatures including heat island effect; which causes high air temperatures. Less vegetation, and more dense areas cause elevated temperatures. This has a large impact on the public and there communities because it causes air pollution, high air conditioning bills, high energy demands and heat related illnesses and death. Concrete, brick and asphalt are great conductors of heat while vegetation helps reduce heat island effect A green roof will also increase the air pollution absorption which in turn breathes new life into the air. Just as pavements and roofs heat up the air temps. outside they also do the same for the inside. Even with insulation installed in buildings and residences, they sill experience the consequences of heat island effects. To solve the problem, most people increase the air temperatures inside using air conditioners but this further advances the problem.
This new awareness of green roofs and sustainability is causing a new green building movement. Simple steps by the community can reduce the impact of stormwater runoff and heat island effect. Installing cool or vegetated roof will ultimately help you reduce your carbon footprint, become more green and help the earth reach its energy saving goals.
