my road fork (carbon/aluminum) still has a tiny bit of play (1mm) when tightened to what i want. Is this okay?
or should it have no play whatsoever? and still steer smoothly.
Not too sure exactly what you mean when you say “tightened to what I want”. It should be tightened, as the first responder said to no play, yet still loose enough that it turns freely. If yours still has 1mm of play when its “tightened to what you want”… maybe what you want isn’t tight enough. Why not try tightening it a bit more to see if you can get that 1mm of play out before going to a shop.
My experience has been that if you can feel any movement between the fork and the frame the headset isn’t tight enough but often another half turn or so on the adjustment screw can solve the problem. If there’s any roughness in the movement that would indicate a bearing problem if its moving smoothly try tweaking that adjustment a bit more.
