Review Of The Sirrus Range Of Hybrid Bikes From Specialized
The Specialized Sirrus range seems to get better every year. Introduced back in the 1980s, they have set the standard for sporty hybrid bikes ever since, with a range of component specifications. The result was that there was a Sirrus to suit every budget.
We have chosen to pick out three from the 2011 range – the Sirrus, Sirrus Sport and Sirrus Elite.
These are the features common across the range.
- They are all mid priced, from £350 to £550 depending on components.
- All use the same lightweight A1 Premium Aluminum double butted alloy frame.
- All feature V-brakes with EZ Fire shifters, triple chainrings, double-wall rims with all-terrain tyres and flat pedals.
The main difference in specification within these three is the front fork – from a straight blade steel fork on the Sirrus, through aluminium on the Sirrus Sport to carbon/aluminium with elastomer inserts on the Sirrus Elite. The elastomer inserts in the fork further reduce vibration. So the money buys greater responsiveness, smoothness of ride and a reduction in weight from 11.9 kg down to 10.6 kg.
You also get an increase in quality in the Shimano gear components across the Specialized Sirrus range. This may or may not be noticeable by most people. Additionally you get a much nicer stem and handlebar with bar-ends on the Elite.
All the bikes in the range have superb looks. Some people may even call them beautiful. I would. All the colours are beautiful. Particularly eye-catching is the black/grey paintwork on the Sport. The effect of the curved, tapered tubing, the smooth welds and the fact that the cables are routed inside the tubes make these frames some of the best-looking out there.
These are bikes aimed at those who want a fast commute to work and to get out on the open road at the weekend. They have plenty of gears (21 or 24) to suit a variety of terrain, legs and lungs.
Which would we choose? This a difficult question to answer. For £350 the basic Sirrus is incredible value, but there’s no doubt that you would probably feel and appreciate the increased smoothness of the aluminium and especially the Carbon Fork of the higher-specification models. If money was no object there is little doubt that one would choose the Elite. But it rarely is! The value-for-money represented by all these bikes should not be ignored. We think you’d be delighted to own and ride any of the Specialized Sirrus range.
