Roadbikes: what’s better to invest in a carbon frame or better components?
I’m debating between 2 bikes 2008 Specialized Ruby Elite Triple VS. 2008 Trek 2.3 WSD Triple. One is an all carbon bike and frame with all 105 components and the other is aluminum bike with Carbon Fork and seatstays and 105/ ultegra components. What’s better to invest in a carbon frame or better components?
Rey, I have to admit when I did my web search on the two bikes when you asked the first time, I missed the frame material. I apologize.
I would ride them both if I were you, as I totally prefer a carbon frame. The ride is different than an aluminum frame with carbon stays. I own both. The carbon frame is stiffer than the aluminum one and at the same time less vibrations are transmitted to the rider. I find the carbon bike to be more responsive under identical conditions.
Regarding the components: You be the judge, as there is a difference of feel and durability (not merely weight and cosmetics — bearings vs. bushings) to a Ultegra rear derailleur as I stated in the last answer. I ride a lot and wore out my idler pulley bushings in my 105 in two seasons. The nice thing is Ultegra and Dura-Ace pulleys fit and improve the derailleur when used for repairs.
When buying a road bike at this price level you really need a test ride.
