Review Of The Camaleonte Range Of Hybrid Bikes From Bianchi
When you first look at the Bianchi Camaleonte range, it can appear rather confusing. Where to begin? The stylishness of these bikes marks them out as unmistakeably Italian. They are designed as all good hybrids should be, for fast commuting and great getaways in the country at weekends or Summer evenings.
At first sight it is strange that the price does not just mirror the range number, from 1 to 5. It’s not just the quality of the components that varies across the different models, the type of rider aimed at determines the type of component as well.
The triple-butted aluminium frame is common to all in the range. The tubing is tapered and curved using a hydroforming process – shaping with high-pressure water. With outstanding paintwork and graphics, these are going to turn heads. They have clearances for mudguards and fittings for pannier racks.
The range uses Shimano geartrains, the type and quality chosen depending on bike type and price.
The entry-level Camaleonte 1 is a great bike for the money. Shimano supplies the entry-level derailleurs. With a triple chainset and 8-speed rear cassette, there are 24 gears in your armoury. Alloy V-brakes and 32 mm tyres mean that this bike should be equally at home on road and towpath. At just under £600 this cannot be thought of as an inexpensive bike. It’s possible to buy cheaper, but maybe not better.
The next two models in the Bianchi hybrid range, namely the Camaleonte 2 & 3, are going to appeal more to those who like to use their bikes off-road. Though not out-and-out mountain bikes, they undeniably have that look about them.
Both models have disc brakes, those on the 2 being mechanical while the 3 has a hydraulic system. The gear mechs are from Shimano’s mountain bike range, but the 3 is fitted with better LX components compared to the Deore/Alivio bits on the 2. The 3 also has fatter tyres, 35mm compared to 32mm, and spd-compatible pedals.
So they will both appeal more to the MTB afficionado, with the choice between them depending on budget. Neither bike has obvious weaknesses – it’s just that the 3 has a bit more quality.
The Camaleonte 4 & Camaleonte 5 are definitely hybrid bikes, but aimed more at road riding than following the trails. They have the feel more of flat-bar road bikes though.
Both have very nice carbon/aluminium forks, which together with narrower 28mm tyres and gear trains from Shimano’s road bike range will give them a great turn of speed. The 5 features the better Tiagra components. They both have V-brakes, as there is less need for the off-road abilities of discs. There are bar ends on both models.
Both are good looking bikes, so again the choice will probably depend on budget. I’d be very pleased with either.
Any Bianchi Camaleonte review must point out that different bikes within the range are going to suit quite different types of rider. The versatile entry-level Camaleonte 1 is great value, the rather more specialised 2 & 3 suited more to off-road riding, while the 4 & 5 are going to be capable of impressive speed on the road.
