Is 13 years old too old to de-claw my cat?
We have recently moved into a new house. We have also had our cat, Bear, for 13 years and I won’t let her inside the house because I am afraid she will tear up our leather furniture. Do you think 13 would be too old to get her de-clawed? She is in perfect health. Other than the risks of having her sedated, is there anything else I should take into consideration?
I would tell you not to do it JUST because of the risk of sedation. The best way to figure this out is to talk to your vet. They will be honest with you because if they believe there is a risk, they simply will tell you not to do it. They do not want to do surgery on an animal they think won’t make it because that’s is not something a vet wants. But then again, they may think there is no risk. Our cat died when she was 16 and when she was in her final days, we knew we had to do something, so I called my vet in desperation and they gave me the truth…that she was getting at the age where they couldn’t help her anymore. They also told me that all the testing and medication and the possible surgery she may need can probably kill her faster. So, we had no choice but to let her go on her own. I would tell you that as an alternative, get one of those HUGE kitty condos that is fully carpeted and usually they will stick to that instead of scratching up your furniture. We got our kitty a year ago and we actually built him a 5ft tall kitty condo because I didn’t want to get him de-clawed. We too had new furniture. So, I was relieved when he never touched anything in the house with his claws except for the kitty condo. Place it someplace where she still feels part of the family but away from the furniture that way she thinks of the condo as HER place in the home but also understands that YOUR place is the furniture. Along with that, if you keep her claws trimmed up nice that way when or if she decides to be a bad kitty, she will do less damage. But call your vet to get the best advice.
