MODERN MAKEOVERS FOR KITCHENS
Giving a well-worn and outdated kitchen an upgrade need not break the bank. There’s a simple recipe. A little imagination, a healthy amount of planning, good quality ingredients, a sprinkle of patience and a good dose of DIY skills is all it takes to cook up a delicious new space that will have even the most seasoned chef drooling!
Doing a new kitchen by yourself with a DIY system isn’t for the faint-hearted but the rewards will be well worth it. With so many advancements in the manufacture and design of self-install kitchens over recent times, the DIYers job has been made so much easier.
Kitchens that are ready made can either be ordered as flat-packs or as fully assembled units – so before you decide which route you’ll take, it’s worth doing all the research on the internet first.
Where does one start?
The very first thing is to take a long hard look at your own kitchen space. Ask yourself what works for you – and what doesn’t. Is the fridge in the right place? What about storage space – is there enough? Are your appliances cluttering up valuable benchtop space? Does the washing up area work for you – or can you improve on it? These are just some of the things you need to think about when planning a new kitchen space to ensure that you take the best of what you have got, and improve where necessary.
Elements to consider include accessibility, walkways, windows, proximity of the fridge, oven and cooktop to the preparation benchtop. The basic design of a kitchen works on a triangle, with the three points being the stove/oven, the fridge and the sink.
Interior decorating magazines, home shows, brochures and the internet are all great sources of ideas for your new kitchen design and you’ll get a good idea of what style and layout you want. The design of kitchens varies so greatly and is such a personal matter that it’s hard to pick a ‘now’ trend, but all-white, clean and seamless kitchens do seem to be in vogue at the moment, as are textured, natural surfaces, hidden cabinets, cupboards and draws that close without handles (push to open), curved elements and high-gloss and glass splashbacks. Making the right choice of kitchen manufacturer is as important as the design itself – and you should always check that they manufacture their cabinets using computerised cnc machinery. These computerised cnc machines cut materials precisely and accurately every time with all the edges perfectly finished to your requirements – making construction easy and giving a professional finish to the cabinetry.
The kitchen supplier should also be willing to provide any support, advice or help with design and layout that you require. They’re the experts and they should be prepared to give their customers access to all their experience and design expertise.
Once you have finalised your design ideas, you’ll need to measure up your spaces including :
· Dimensions of your appliances
· The widths of the doors/walls etc
· Ceiling heights (take care to note any variations)
· Height of the benchtop
· Lighting, plumbing and electrical points
It usually takes quite a while from initial design to the actual cutting of the final measured components (hopefully the manufacturer has a computerised woodworking machine or cnc router for precision cutting!) – but all the time spent on the planning and design will be well worth it in the end. Then it’s A for away – and with a little bit of elbow grease, you’ll soon be cooking up a storm!.
