Was Nietzsche a proto-fascist?
What do you think?From my own interpretation and from reading others’ such as Walter Kaufmann’s and Robert C. Solomon’s opinions,I think his philosophy was just misunderstood.He used colorful and over-the-top imagery(probably from opium) in his writing along with extreme metaphors which led to having his works be perverted by his sister and the nazi party.I do however disagree with some stuff,but as Nietzsche said in his own words,he wanted to be overcome and he wanted people to think for themselves.I also think his insanity was coming through some of his later works too.
Nietzsche supported the aims and goals of the revolutionaries of 1848, i.e., democratic and republican Germany. His politcal thoughts were more akin to the Social Democracy rather than the Nazism.
Some of his philosphy did appeal to German nationalists. I have read somewhere’s his sister played a role after his death making him seem “proto-Nazi” as you stated.
We will never know as he died long before the fall of Wilhelm and the rise of Nazism. But his writings at least in my humble opinion never convinced me he was “nazi-like.” It is unfortunate though his writings have been joined at the hip with Hitlerism.
