Are Auto Brands Just Class Icons?
You may have noticed when you are holidaying that cars you know as Vauxhall in the UK are branded ‘Opel’ in Germany for example.The familiar Griffin badge is replaced by a very Teutonic looking lightning strike, but at the end of the day, they look like the same cars! So are all these different brand marques just a reflection of national characteristics or just plain pandering to snob and class appeal?
Lanica last sold cars in the UK in 1994 but the parent GM felt that making a return under the Chrysler badge would add more credibility for British punters. That’s probably quite shrewd, as given the reputation Lancias had for being rust buckets, many prospective buyers would have opted for temporary car insurance only on anything with a Lancia badge.Of course that does mean that some Chrysler models like the luxurious 300C and the vast Grand Voyager people carrier will be sold throughout Europe under the Lancia name.
Again that makes sense, as Chrysler does not have a big presence throughout Europe.Branding their vehicles as Lancia means continental consumers will feel more affinity to a brand they regard as domestic. Many British consumers will often consider taking out temporary insurance to test drive a Lexus, but would turn their noses up at the same deal on a Toyota for example. Very few are aware that the Toyota and Lexus marques are only separate in Europe and the U.S.A. In Japan, Lexus is sold as Toyota because the reputation of the parent brand is so high there was no need to create a different marque.
So if you do fancy a Lexus, short term car insurance is a very compelling way to persuade a friend or relative to loan you their car.Not only will it reassure the generous donor that their Lexus is fully protected, it also means you can use the borrowed vehicle without risking anyone’s no-claims discounts. And, of course, you can also offer your beat up old Corolla as additional security, legitimately claiming that it’s from the same stable!
