3 classic videogames from our youth
With the retro fad in full swing at the moment with everyone buying retro bags, clothes and anything with the word ‘retro’ stuck in front of it, we’re going to take alook at retro gaming. The retro gaming craze has seen people digging out there old video game consoles and start playing then again, rather than splash out on a new console. Tetris, the Mario Bros and Pacman to name a few games we used to spend hours in front of. The thing about retro gaming is that it can be a cheap hobby -picking up an old console and 10 games is cheaper than getting a playstation 3 and one game. Now these games wont be as ‘pretty’ as the games of today, but they still are enjoyable to play. Here’s afew of them to take us down memory lane.
Tetris. Nintendo had the brilliant idea of selling Tetris with their new hand held console, the game boy, which ended up clocking up 27 million consoles sold worldwide. The goal of Tetris was to clear all the blocks that dropped down from the top of the screen. The game gets faster as you progress through the levels and if the blocks reach the top of the screen its game over. Once Tetris was in the home almost all the family engaged in playing it.- so simple to get ino, yet so hard to put down.
Pacman. Everyone in their forties will remember Pacman. A videogame that was popular in arcades in the 1980s, Pacaman saw you guide the yellow ball with teeth around the maze, trying to eat the tiny white balls while avoiding the ghosts trying to eat him. Released in 1980, the game caught the imagination of the world and became a merchandising bonanza, with everything from books, tv shows, t-shirts and cds based on Pacman.
The Super Mario Bros. Mario was at one point, better known in the ninties than Mickey Mouse. First appearing in the game Donkey Kong, and dubbed ‘Jumpman’, Mario and his brother Luigi got their break on the NES console from Nintendo in the eighties, and didnt look back. The Mario bros had to save princess Peach from the clucthes of a giant dinsoaur named Bowser, this would require them to jump on turtle shells, collect coins and use mushrooms and stars as powerups. Mario’s range of games has gone from platformers to racing, tennis, golf, RPGs and many others.
