Physics using linear eq. at constant acceleration?
1. A pole vaulter after crossing the bar lands on a foam cushion. His downward speed as first touches the cushion is 6.8m/s and he sinks 25cm into the cushion before stopping. Estimate the acceleration assumed constant,while being stopped by cushion.
Here are some possible formulas:
1. a=v2-v1/t
2.d=(v2+v1)t/2
3.d=v1t +atsquared/2
4.d=vsquared-vsquared/2a
Since only speed ( 6.8m/s ) and distance ( 25cm ) are given and no time is involved, you can rule out the first three equations that you wrote above (all of them require the time and no time is given) and correctly pick the relevant formula, namely the 4th one:
(4) ………. d = { (velocity_final) (velocity_final) – (velocity_initial) (velocity_initial) } / (2a)
where ( velocity_final ) = 0, of course. One more thing. Since the 25cm distance is not in SI unit, you have to convert it to SI before you make your final computation.
