Mountain Bike Components
There are so many combinations you can end up with when you want to mix and match mountain bike components. Their quality and how they are assembled determine the performance of your bike. Included in the mountain bike components are crank sets, front and rear derailleurs, forks, brakes, bottom brackets, wheel sets, cassettes, chains, headsets, shifters, stems, tires and tubes, and the long list of mountain bike components continues.
For you to know the kind of bike you’ll be buying, it’s essential for you to know the mountain bike components. Despite the long list of mountain bike components, you need to focus on the three major mountain bike components which are the fork, wheels and brakes. You may spend much on these three major mountain bike components, then the amount to spend for the other mountain bike components can be set to minimum.
FORKS – One of the most important mountain bike components is the fork. Most mountain bikes nowadays have front suspension forks. If they don’t, they are probably hybrid road bikes or touring bikes. Fork is one of the most important mountain bike components because it’s essential for the bike’s performance. The coil spring forks are ideal for those in a tight budget or those who want to have an all-around bike. These coil spring forks can be serviceable, adjustable and easily tuned. On the downside, these forks become relatively heavy because the internal steel spring adds to forks’ weight, although the same steel spring makes them tougher. Because of their durability, the coil spring forks are perfect for riders who do lots of jumping, DH racing or throwing their bikes around. A great choice for XC riders or those who want more adjustability on their forks are air spring forks because they are more lighter than spring coil forks but are more expensive. As long as you have shock pump, you can easily adjust the air spring forks from 0psi to 300 psi.
BRAKES – Brakes are very important among mountain bike components but they are secondary because the brakes can be easily upgraded. It would be best if you can have hydraulic disc brakes, but if not, get mechanical disc brakes. Mecahnical pull brakes or V-brakes can work well for those who are on a really tight budget.
WHEELS – Wheel is in the list of the major mountain bike components. You’ll have better ride if you have better quality wheels including their rims, hubs, tires and spokes. When looking for wheels, the lighter is obviously the better because the weight makes a big difference out on the trail. You can invest on more expensive wheel because it’s one of the major mountain bike components. The tire of a reputable brand is proven to last longer. The tread pattern must be considered depending on the bike’s use. For riding on paths, the tread pattern of semi-slicks can be used, while the big knobby tires are great for gravel and rough terrain.
