All About Stump Grinding
Trees are cut down all the time and this is a simple process. The more difficult part to remove is the stump. Sometimes a stump is left a bit taller with the intention of using it as a seat. Or the stump may be cut off low to the ground. Stumps can be left to slowly rot away, a process that takes years. If you are living on a farm the stump probably won’t be in your way but not so in a residential yard. Often a stump will begin to grow again by sending out fresh shoots. This new growth can quickly get away and establish itself.
Stumps can also become a nuisance if they are on a lawn area. These are a nuisance when mowing the grass and can trip up unwary pedestrians. An associated problem is the remaining root system which protude above ground level. These roots are easily hit by lawnmower blades resulting in damage to the machine.
However with an efficient stump grinding machine these stumps and roots can be easily dealt to. These machines are not bothered by wood or soil and can burrow down below the ground converting the stumps and roots into a pile of wood chips mixed with dirt. Once completed, the ground is ready for replanting or to be sown with grass seed.
Stump grinders or stump cutters are powered units that employ a spinning disc mounted with metal teeth that reduce the stump to wood chips. These machines come in various sizes from domestic rotary hoe size up to huge bulldozer sized monsters.
A typical stump grinder incorporates a cutter wheel with fixed carbide teeth. Movement of the cutter wheel can be controlled by the operator by either swinging the machine from side to side, or in the case of larger machines the cutting head is moved by hydraulics.
