The Stainless Steel Drinking Bottle Revolution
A green revolution is quietly changing our drinking habits. Savvy consumers no longer swig designer bottled waters, but carry their own eco-chic stainless steel drinking bottle filled from their home filtered water.
Pure water is essential to our health. Most of us know that. We carry water with us when we go out and try to get through our daily recommended amount. But if you grab a bottle of mountain spring water to go with your sandwich at lunch, are you really getting the healthy pure water that your body needs for optimum health?
A huge industry has grown up around bottled water. We are sold images of crystalline alpine waterfalls, idyllic sparkling springs. Water from these sources is purer, better for us than our tap water, they promise. Perhaps if we could drink direct from the spring it would be, though even that is not necessarily the case. But when we drink that water it has been sitting in a plastic bottle for a time, perhaps exposed to heat and light on a shelf for weeks. What they don’t tell you is that plastic bottles are themselves a potentially damaging source of chemicals.
Plastics which contain BPA have been found to release endocrine mimicking hormones, especially when exposed to heat or high fat contents. These are absorbed into our body when we consume the food or drink that has been plastic wrapped. It is a slow process but long term effects are serious, causing, among other things, reduced sperm counts, early puberty in girls and various cancers. What mother giving her baby a drink of water or juice, or sending her six year old off to school with a healthy snack and bottle of water would intentionally expose her child to these contaminants?
So how can we make sure that we and our children get enough water through the day if we can’t trust bottled water? The safest containers for foodstuffs and drinks are glass and stainless steel. Glass is rarely practical to carry about, but stainless steel is tough, long-lasting and fairly light to carry, making it an ideal material for a water bottle. A new revolution is growing among the green and the health conscious. The latest name in designer bottled water is no longer chic. A re-usable stainless steel drinking bottle is. If each member of the family has their own stainless steel water bottle and gets into the habit of never going out without filling it, a big step towards your family’s long term health will have been taken.
Of course investing in safe, long lasting reusable water bottles doesn’t just have a huge impact on our own health, but on the health of the environment too. Plastics are one of the biggest threats to our planet. Non-biodegradable, every single piece of plastic produced in the last 100 years is still present somewhere on the planet: floating about in huge rubbish lakes in the oceans, destroying wild-life, choking up land-fill sites, or reduced into tiny micro-particles that get into the food we eat. Plastic water bottles contribute hugely to this problem and are one of the easiest plastics to phase out of our lives. Re-using the bottles and then recycling may seem like an answer, but leaching of contaminants from the plastic increases with re-use, and recycling, though it helps, still consumes more of our planet’s limited resources. As far as our carbon footprint is concerned, when you factor in the resources used to produce a plastic bottle of water, drinking it is the equivalent in driving 1km in your car.
A big concern for many, which fuelled the boom in bottled water in the first place, is whether tap water is really safe to drink. Isn’t it chemically treated and full of chlorine? In developed countries where water is strictly regulated, the tap water is safe to drink, but might not always taste so great.
The answer is to filter your tap water. Your investment in one of these and a set of stainless water bottles will pay for itself in no time once you no longer need to buy expensive bottled water. Not only that but you will at last have peace of mind and the security that the water you are drinking really is making a positive difference to your health.
Once you decide on buying stainless steel bottles it is worth looking for good quality ones. After all they should last you for many years, even for the rest of your life. Look for bottles made from food grade stainless steel, with no lining materials, just pure stainless steel. You will probably also want to know that they have been ethically produced by a responsible company.
Joining the water revolution and taking this small step towards a greener life-style will reward you and your family with improved long-term health, save you money for many years and give you an endless source of genuinely pure bottled water that is sustainable for you and the planet.
