What is the barrel shaped fixture towards the end of some power cords for mp3 players, phones & CD/DVD players?
On some of my electronic devices such as mp3 player and mobile phone the power cord on the low voltage side has a factory installed item which is close to the end that plugs into the device. What is it? I’ve also seen the same type of thing on the USB cable for the same type of devices. I’ve always speculated that it might be a magnet for noise suppression. But I want to know exactly what it is, what it does and what is the typical gain in performance for having one vs. not?
It’s a ferrite ring, and you’re right thinking it’s for noise suppression. What purpose it serves on USB cables I don’t know (I once had a guy asking for an ethernet cable with a ferrite ring…WTF ethernet cables don’t even carry any current!), you usually find them on AV leads such as scart, HDMI and whatnot.
