Why does evolutionary theory disapprove of talk of ‘superior’ species?
Why? Isn’t it reasonable to speak of Homo sapiens as the most superior species, considering the advances we’ve made in art, literature and science etc.?
It’s not like any other species on Earth has, right? Why is this, by the way, is it to do with the evolution of the brain or something, and might other species eventually become sentient and possess intellects etc.?
More than one question in there, sorry.
“Superior” is in the eye of the beholder, and it is, by and large, a human label. There is no such distinction in nature… either an organism is fit and it thrives, or it isn’t and it declines.
We do have intelligence, and we do create things that no other species has, but nearly every discovery we make into animal intelligence shows that they’re smarter than we give them credit for. Sure, we’re still smarter, but it’s not a unique gift – our intelligence is simply more developed.
But then, why is intelligence the gold standard for superiority? Mice aren’t that smart, but they reproduce like crazy and can eat nearly anything. They’re so adaptable that they exist pretty much anyplace that is conducive to life at all. You can’t beat cockroaches in terms of resilience. You don’t get much more powerful than a grizzly, faster than a cheetah or horse, or larger than a whale. All these things are suited to their environments and thus survive, and that’s all that really matters.
We simply place intelligence on top of a pedestal because a) it lets us place it there, and b) we have it while most animals don’t. It’s an entirely human construct, and has no meaning in nature. Since evolution (and science in general) is the study of the natural world, superiority means nothing in that context. Since it doesn’t add anything meaningful to the discussion, it is left out.
