The Kona Dew Deluxe Hybrid Bike Reviewed
The Kona Dew Deluxe is the fourth bike in the Dew range of hybrid bikes from Kona and incorporates several upgrades from the Dew Plus. Some of the upgrades are to components which while invisible will still improve the performance of the bike. Some however are more visible and will have a more direct effect on the riding experience.
All the models in the range represent good value street hybrid bikes, from a well-respected manufacturer, with tons of style.
Primarily aimed and fitted out for street riding – commuting to work, or out-and-about on the lanes at the weekend – the Dew will also let you explore paths and gentle trails when you want, which is what hybrid bike riding is all about. The most important features for hybrid bike users is that the bike should be comfortable and convenient to ride. The bike should ride easily on the road, but be able to take to grass and gravel when needed. The Dew Deluxe appears to deliver on all these fronts.
The frame is constructed from Kona’s 7005 aluminium. The sloping top tube means that there is a safe standover clearance, also that the model is unisex. The smart black paintwork with refined graphics looks great.
The appearance of the frame is one of the main changes to this bike compared to previous models in the range. The beautifully tapered top tube intoduced to the Deluxe is truly stunning.
It features 700mm road wheels and uses Kona’s own design Project 2 aluminium fork. The 700mm wheels give you far greater speed on the road, which is where the bike will spend most of its time. The Dew Deluxe carries narrower tyres than those seen on the lower models. At 32mm the road performance will be noticeably improved. The rigid aluminium fork helps in keeping the weight down, and is simple to maintain.
The frame and fork have fittings for mudguards though – essential in a commuting bike.
It’s fitted with a triple chainset – good for flexibility and ease on hills and for distances.
Other features include:-
- Improved hydraulically-operated disc brakes, now by Tektro. Disc brakes mean that the braking surfaces are kept clear of mud and grit, and also stay drier in the rain, improving braking performance. The hydraulic system makes for smooth operation.
- 27 gears (up from 24) with useful ratios, from upgraded Shimano components. The Alivio shifters are great to use. Changing gear is simplicity itself. There are two clickable levers, one for thumb and one for forefinger, up or down.
- Comfort saddle and flat pedals all make for a practical, no-nonsense bike. Flat pedals will suit most people, but can always be upgraded to cleats if you want.
The Kona Dew Deluxe is a package of quality components, still priced at a level that almost everyone will find appealing. This is now a beautiful bike to look at, and the increase in the number of gears from 24 to 27 is a really valuable improvement over the earlier models.
