Does it matter what chain size you have for a Free Wheel?

I’m getting a FMF PowerMoto Alloy Precision Bearing Cassette Hub and I have a 1/8” chain and a 1/8” inch chain wheel and am wondering if the free wheel needs to 1/8” or can it be 3/32”. It doesn’t say anywhere what size it is? Plz tell me!

I’d contact the people you bought the freewheel from and ask them. But in generalities:

We’re talking singlespeed here, right? More than likely you could use either on the new freewheel/cog. You can use the 1/8″ chain if your chainline is straight (if the 1/8″ is too big, it’s only too big by 1/64″ on each side of the tooth–and 1/64″ is pretty small). You should replace the chain anyways since you have a new cog–if you don’t, you’ll wear it out quickly.

But if you buy a new chain you ought to plan on changing the front ring as well–and I’d do them both in 3/32. One, new parts are much smoother and will last longer; two, you’ll get your gearing right and three, there are far better chains available in 3/32 than in 1/8. Even if you find that the cog you bought is 1/8, you can dress it down pretty easily–but my guess is that it won’t be an issue.
