My wife’s car front Disc Brake gives a bit of squeal sound when braking. Not loud but she insists to be fixed?
She suggests adding some oil which I obviously disagree.We are quarelling over this ,to me,trivial matter ! The brake pads are 70% new !
Well first things first DO NOT PUT OIL ON YOUR BRAKE PADS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s just a small grade up from driving without brakes at all. Oil will ruin your pads and cause reduced braking ability.
Now to get to the reasons brakes make noise.
In most cases the squeal is caused by vibrations coming from the pads when you apply them. This is very serviceable. In many cases all that needs to be done is to have some “brake quiet” or “brake anti squeal” put on the backs of the pads.
Weather you do that yourself, or have someone else do it, check the “anti-rattle clips” and “slide bolts” while it is being done. These could be your problem as well. The clips are in-expensive and should really be changed at every brake job. The slide bolts may only have to be cleaned and re-greased. But again, do not grease or oil your pads at all.
