Review Of The Bad Boy Range Of Hybrid Bikes From Cannondale
Once seen, never forgotten – the Cannondale Bad Boy range of hybrid bikes really stand out from the rest. But are they able to deliver on the promises, or is the matt black look just for show?
Hybrid bikes were born out of a desire to produce a go-anywhere bike which would be suitable for grass and gravel as well as the open road, so road bikes were modified using mountain bike ideas.
By starting with a mountain bike and making it more road-friendly, Cannondale have produced the Bad Boy. The giveaways are the 26″ wheels, wide tyres and disc brakes.
What is the make-up of the various models?
Some features appear throughout the range. Hand built 6061 aluminium frames, finished in a sophisticated matt black are common to all. All carry front forks which will take disc brakes.
Both frame and forks are designed to take either 26” or 700mm wheels. It’s one of Cannondale’s design ideas that you can swap the wheelsets on a Bad Boy to suit your riding needs.
All carry the same flat handlebars and run on black rims fitted with Schwalbe’s custom Bad Boy tyres. The look is uniform and beautifully distinctive throughout the range.
The entry-level model is the Bad Boy Al V26. The bike has V-brakes, but the design will allow disc brakes to be retro-fitted later on if you so decide. Fairly basic Shimano gear mechs give you 27 gears. The semi-slick 50mm tyres are a good combination of low rolling resistance and shock-absorbing for off-road. A great hybrid bike.
The Bad Boy Al is exactly the same with the exception of the brakes. The Tektro disc brakes are better for off-road riding as they remain clear of the mud, and give all-round higher braking power. This is a useful upgrade if you can afford it.
The Bad Boy Deore is the next model in the range and has better Shimano Deore gear components. Smoother, more reliable changing but still 27 gears. This model has narrower rims and 35 mm tyres. Still wide enough for the bridlepaths but a bit quicker on the road. The rest of the specs are the same as the Al.
Next up the Cannondale Bad Boy range is the R-SLX. The drivetrain is now Shimano Slx, which should make for still greater gear selection performance. The chainset is only a double, rather than the triple fitted to the lower models, meaning that you now have 18 gears. Additionally the 26″ wheels are changed for 700mm, showing that the R-SLX is going to perform far better on the road. Frame, fork, disc brakes etc are unchanged.
Top of the range is the Bad Boy Ultra. The only difference from the R-SLX is in the front suspension. Rather than a conventional suspension fork, the Cannondale Headshock fork has just one suspension module, above the two fork legs. This is both simpler and lighter. The fork is fitted with a lockout which is engaged for greater stability when you need it. Otherwise, with 700mm road wheels, 18 gears from the SLX drivetrain, Tektro disc brakes and the rest, it’s the same as the R-SLX. The Ultra looks to be the ultimate street machine.
So whatever you want from a hybrid bike, the Cannondale Bad Boy range looks to have an option for you. These are quality bikes, even at the modest end of the range. However, the pricier models have features well worth finding the extra for.
