Scott Sportster Bikes Review Part 2
The Scott Sportster range can be difficult to comprehend – there are a lot of different specifications to understand. I’ve split the range into two halves, to simplify the task. The higher specification models in the range are the Sportster 30, 25, 20 and 10 – these are the models we’ll look at here.
Contrary to what you might expect, the Sportster 10 is the highest priced model and the 30 the lowest (in this group) – model numbers and price do not correlate as might expect. However, this doesn’t always follow – the 25 is more expensive than the 20
All four are available in standard Sportster and Solution versions. The Solution was designed in the first instance as a womens bike. However, the more mountain-bike look has proved popular with many men.
Each version of a particular model differs in:-
- Frame geometry (and maybe colour)
- Handlebar – the Solution version being a bit longer and having a bit more bend.
- Saddle – the Solution saddle is a bit wider and more relaxed
Everything else – components, weight, price etc is identical between the Sportster and Solution versions of each model. The major differences between the models are in the area of brakes, gear components and front fork.
All Scott Sportster bikes have frames built to the same design, from 6061 aluminium. The tubing is double-butted for strength, with nicely tapered top and down tubes. The paintwork and graphics are superb and there’s enough clearance to fit mudguards and fittings for pannier racks if you want.
The first bike in this group is the Sportster 30. This follows on from the Sportster 40 which is a bike aimed very much at those wanting speed on the road. The hydraulic disc brakes on the 30 are really the only difference. The rims are upgraded and come in a very smart white finish.
Next up the range is the Sportster 20. V-brakes feature again on this model, and upgraded Deore and SLX drivetrain components are a definite improvement. This combined with a lower weight (now only 12 kg) means that the 20 is great for fast commuting and street riding. The 20 therefore is significantly improved. At a cost it’s true, but it’s great quality.
Shimano hydraulic disc brakes and upgraded rims are the only changes to the Sportster 25 over the 20. The best hybrid bikes show a combination of off-road ability and road speed. the Sportster 25 is getting close to that ideal. It’s hard to argue against the benefits of paying the extra.
The bike that tops the range is the Sportster 10. It costs a little more than the 25, so what do you get for your money? Well, you get improvements to the fork, which has a remote lock out, to the Rear Mech, a Shimano Deore, and to the brakes, discs from Avid. On top of this, the weight is reduced to 11.7 kg. A bike with these specifications would cost a great deal more from other manufacturers.
Read any Scott Sportster review and you will see that Scott are well known for the quality and value of their bikes. I would agree and for that reason have no hesitation in recommending them.
