how to repair gear shift cable 1978 varsity schwinn?
i could really use some detailed instructions on how to replace gear shift cable on a 1978 schwinn varsity 10 speed. thanks 
You will see how it goes together when you take it apart. If your housing is fine you wont need a new one.
Start at whatever Derailleur has the bad cable, usually your rear derailleur. loosen the small retainer nut on the derailleur and pull the cable through each piece of housing individually, removing the housing as you go.
Now oil well each piece of housing and the cable and thread your new cable through starting at your shifter on back through all your housings to the derailleur worcking each housing back and forth to make sure it is well lubed and re-attach with some tension.
This is your final adjustment. If you cant reach some gears you will have to make your adjustment here until you are within tolerances. Good luck.
