Review Of The Sirrus Sport Hybrid Bike From Specialized
The Specialized Sirrus Sport is the next model up in the Sirrus range of hybrid bikes from Specialized. The components are improved – the main upgrade being the aluminium rather than steel front fork. Specialized say that the Sport is still aimed at “exercise, commuting, or hitting the open road”, but has enough performance for the occasional event or even triathlon. So what is the Sirrus Sport all about?
The A1 aluminium frame is similar to on the basic Sirrus. The curved, tapered and smooth-welded tubing is classic Sirrus, the Sport being finished in a beautiful satin black/charcoal combination. Any road vibration is smoothed out by the 28c tyres, resulting in a light, responsive and affordable bike.
As mentioned before, the main upgrade over the Sirrus is the front fork. The fork’s aluminium legs are stiffer than the steel, resulting in weight saving and an increase in responsiveness. The bike will take pannier and mudguards if desired.
The Sirrus Sport features Shimano brakes, brake levers, shifters and derailleurs. All are slightly improved though, especially the Alivio Rear Mech. The EZ-Fire Gear Shifters are simple – two small levers, one gear up or down per click. The triple chainset and Shimano 8-Speed Cassette gives you a total of 24 gears to choose from.
The rest of the bike is pretty much the same as the basic Sirrus. The handlebar on the Sport is a flat alloy. It’s fitted with comfortable Gel Grips to eliminate vibration. The Riva 155mm saddle from body Geometry should provide comfort for hours on the road.
The tyres are Specialized’s own All-Condition Sport with Flak-Jacket puncture resistance, designed for low rolling resistance on the road, but with plenty of grip for towpaths and trails.
As most people will want to cycle in normal shoes and clothing, the Sport is fitted with flat pedals and a chainguard. You could of course fit a pair of toeclips if you feel the need.
The Specialized Sirrus Sport is a useful step up from the entry-level Sirrus for those who are looking for some extra performance. It comes with a price tag somewhat higher. The bike is obviously a Sirrus – the stylish frame with its beautiful finish give the game away. So for the money, there’s little to fault the Sirrus sport. Whether commuting to work, or covering the miles on the open road, you won’t go wrong
