I am using a gel type battery on a solar operated gate?
I have tried using deep cycle marine batteries, but they only last a year. I have a orbit yellow battery that I installed on the gate, and is working fine. The gate installer checked the amps, or volts, and it was putting out 15, on a clowdy day. Will this battery last longer on this type of aplication?
Recharging of the battery is a critical issue. You say the panel is putting out 15, I will assume that is 15 volts (because it would take a huge panel to put out 15 amps).
Was this voltage reading taken while the panel was connected to the battery or not? If the panel is not connected to anything, it should be doing At Least 15v, typically 18-20v.
If it was connected to the battery and you had 15v, you are probably overcharging the battery and ruining it as a result.
There needs to be a regulator between the solar panel and the battery.
To determine if the solar panel is keeping up, measure the voltage across the battery, it should be at least 13.7v in the afternoon after the sun has had a chance to charge it up. If the voltage is low, adding another panel may help. It may be that you just don’t have enough charging power. A typically deep cycle battery (about the size of a car battery) will Waste power when it is nearing a full charge, this can be several watts quite easily. If all you had was a 5 watt panel, I would expect it to easily keep the battery maintained but wont make up for much running of the gate.
