Why does my bike keep breaking?
so ive had my new bike for about a month now and for some random reason. the chain just snapped. ive been having problems with my bikes for a while. my previous bike had the derailleur hangar shear off 3 times within 2 months of getting my new bike. i just got a Giant Trance X4 and now the chain has broken off. is it just bad luck or am i doing something wrong? and i have not had any major crashes on the new bike either.
Unless you were cross-chained and putting down power, the chain is likely just bad luck… I wouldn’t worry about it. More than likely, it was just assembled poorly and had a ‘stuck’ link that gave out. In my entire cycling lifetime, I’ve only ever broken two chains. As long as you keep your equipment well maintained and replace your chain when it’s time, you shouldn’t have to worry about that. Pick up a good replacement like a KMC and you should be good to go. As for the derailleur hanger… I’m guessing that wasn’t your Giant? That’s typically only something that happens on old bikes or crappy bikes. The Trance is a good ride and you should be fine as long as you don’t try to ride it like it’s a Downhill Bike. Keep in mind that mountain biking is tough on equipment so it’s a good idea to check your gear between rides so that things like a bent derailleur hanger doesn’t turn into a derailleur going into your spokes.
Edit – @ whomever mentioned the Walmart bikes… Giant’s aren’t sold at Walmart and, whatever you ride, there’s an extremely good chance it was actually built in one of Giant’s factories.
Edit 2 – @ whomever said you’re putting too much torque on it… well that’s just flat out stupid. I’m no pro by any measure and I’ve been tested out at 1380 watts in a sprint and actually favor pushing a bigger gear than most riders. Pro riders like Cavendish put 2000 watts in a sprint. If chains don’t snap after a four hour stage of constant use and then being subjected to that kind of hammering then it’s not going to happen based on power output of the average rider…
