Timber Surf Art
How’s this for a great business story.
Situated on the Gold Coast of Australia, Driftwood Timber Surf Co is family owned and run by close friends of mine Jason and Tina Williams.
Driftwood Timber Surf Co specialise in creating surf inspired art with their collection ranging from Mini Malibu Photo Frames right through to their signature piece the Longboard Shaped Coffee Table.
I caught up with Jason and Tina last week for a long overdue beer and took down some notes to write this article. It’s amazing that it has been nearly 13 years!
“It started just for something to do one day when Tina and I were mucking about” says Jason “I had just cut out a length of timber and put some tubular metal legs on it to make a coffee table. I got Tina to paint a wave on it for me and then I put a coat of laquor on it to protect the wood and the picture. Over the next couple of weeks, when any of our mates came over they would all say how cool the table was and 2 or 3 of them asked if we could make them one. It all just clicked it from there.”
Within months they were soon spending every weekend at the markets selling the tables and got so busy that Jason had to quit his job and do it full time.
Jason went onto say “In the early days for at least 3 months, Tina hand painted each and every Coffee Table, which took about 4 hours. Now, we were selling an average of 10 to 11 Coffee Tables each weekend which meant that Tina spent all week and half the weekend just painting. Not to mention that I spent my week making them from scratch with only hand tools.
“We moved into the factory in Tweed Heads soon after that” Tina adds. “We had just spent about a year working from underneath our house so when we got that space back, it was epic.”
Within 3 years Tina and Jason had made the business so successful that unfortunately people starting copying their work. Imagine how hard that would have been. Impressed that their work was so good that someone wanted to copy it but disappointed that something that they created was being stolen, something had to change.
And change it did, Jason decided that if you can’t beat them, join them and he invested in a fully automated CNC overhead router that cut the time taken to make the surf coffee tables and other product lines that they now had by 90%. This meant that they could focus on high quantity, high quality and low costs.
Tina also decided to make a group of photo collections that could be printed, even though she made sure that each collection was a limited edition of 300 pieces it meant that their production potential had now increased by ten times.
“That was a bit of a scary time for us because we now could take on anyone that wanted to copy our product. We could do it faster, cheaper and far better quality than any of the cheats out there.” Jason added.
“We were approached by a number of surfing organisations to do trophies for their contests. I am a surfer and getting to make trophies for Surfing Australia, Surfing QLD and Surfing NSW was awesome” he says.
Fast forward 13 years later and Tina and Jason have a beautiful family with 4 girls, ranging from 1 through to 10, they still work out of the factory in Machinery Drive, South Tweed Heads and they have an awesome business that has exported to at least 12 different countries around the world.
