About The Invention Of Mountain Bikes
As you can guess just from the name, mountain bikes are made for riding on mountain trails. They were designed by bike lovers who liked exploring on their bikes, but needed something more efficient than the bicycles that were around at the time. They couldn’t just go out and buy Diamondback bikes: they were forced to invent MBs on their own. With just a few ordinary tools and no money, they had to rely on their wits and determination.
The bikes they had to work with at the time were nothing special. They weren’t the sleek racing bikes because those bikes had narrow tires that had no traction in the dirt. They had to start with bikes with fat tires.
They did, however, take the derailleurs off their racing bikes and make them work on their fat tired bikes. They came up with a hybrid that had both fat tires and a large range of gears. The first ones were strange looking bikes, indeed.
Next they went to work on the handlebars. They started off just sticking a flat bar of steel on the bike, because they wanted a lower profile and could really push the bike on the hills. However, they needed to lean back for traction, so they added ends to the handlebars so they could change their hand position and pull back on the handlebars when they needed to.
Still not satisfied with their hybrid designs, these young inventors started designing and making custom frames from scratch. They started using lighter weight metals and made radical changes to the frame designs. It wasn’t long before people took notice of their bikes and started ordering them from the makers.
These small time bicycle designers eventually became some of the biggest selling brands of mountain bikes. Even after the Schwinn mountain bike and others like it came on the market, these smaller bike makers continued to thrive. Today, they are still some of the best selling MBs.
A guy screaming down a slope in a black football helmet in doesn’t look too good and the helmet really wasn’t designed for that kind of use anyway. Helmets made specifically for mountain bike riding were invented. Today, you can get a black helmet that both looks great and is perfect for riding your mountain bike.
Nobody can write the mountain bike off as a passing fad anymore. They are clearly here to stay and outsell most other types of bikes. Even though they were originally designed for riding offroad, they are seen on city streets everywhere. They have come a long way and now are high tech machines with up to 24 gears and sophisticated breaking systems.
They may not have had the same impact on our lives as the personal computer, but MBs have a similar past. Both the PC and the mountain bike originated as a glimmer in the eyes of a handful of inventive and determined individuals. They both testify to what ingenuity and hard work can accomplish.
