How Mountain Bikes Have Evolved
It’s obvious from the name that the mountain bike was designed for riding on mountain slopes. The guys who invented them rode around on ordinary bikes, but wanted to take them offroad. Since there were no Diamondback bikes around, they had to invent the MB themselves. They didn’t have many tools to work with, but they had a lot of imagination and determination.
Road and racing bikes were no good for their purposes because they had such skinny tires. Those tires are designed to reduce traction, while their bikes needed even more. The bikes they worked with were fat tired street bikes.
Those racing bikes did have state of the art derailleurs, though. They took the derailleurs from their racing bikes and adapted them to their fat tired bicycles to make a hybrid bike that had a lot of gears, but fat tires.
Then came the handlebars. At first they just used a straight piece of steel in place of the upright handlebars that came standard on the cruisers. This way they leaned over the bike for speed. These straight handlebars needed something else for hill climbing, so they added bars on the ends so they could really pull uphill.
Still not satisfied with their hybrid designs, these young inventors started designing and making custom frames from scratch. They started using lighter weight metals and made radical changes to the frame designs. It wasn’t long before people took notice of their bikes and started ordering them from the makers.
Only years later did the big companies start making mountain bikes. The Schwinn mountain bike followed the earlier brands. As a result, those small manufacturers established names for themselves and were able to compete. Today, they still hold a large share of the MB market.
One thing that wasn’t cool looking about the early mountain bike riders was their choice of helmets. A black helmet designed for playing football in was both impractical and stupid looking. Helmet designers saw an opening and came up with great designs made specifically for mountain bikes.
If anybody thought that the mountain bike was just a fad before, nobody does today. They continue to dominate the market and people ride them on the road even more than off the road. With all the improvements that the big parts manufacturers have come up with, you can now get a bike with 24 gears and disc brakes.
They may not have had the same impact on our lives as the personal computer, but MBs have a similar past. Both the PC and the mountain bike originated as a glimmer in the eyes of a handful of inventive and determined individuals. They both testify to what ingenuity and hard work can accomplish.
