Garbage disposal hums, but will not spin. Tried the alan wrench method.?
Garbage disposal stopped working. It is humming but not spinning. I used the alan wrench to spin the hex in the center and it is spinning fine like there is nothing stuck. I also tried pressing the reset button but that has not proven successful either. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
It is more likely jammed. Humming is because it is trying to move. Take a short broom handle or plunger stick. Place the end in the disposal at an angle and move it until it is locked/wedged on the bottom on one of the “blades” (the blade it just a piece of metal that will pivot, they are not sharp, but are “basshers”) Once it is wedged, try to turn the whole basket using the stick as a lever. The extra force that cannot be applied with the wrench, should loosen the basket and blade.
Remove the stick, cover and see if it starts. Once whatever is wedged is loosened, it should work fine.
