When Transporters Are Designed With Excellence
Such a marvellous idea could only have been the handiwork of those perfectionists at Mercedes Benz, for no one else could have seen this project through. Make a nice carrier that will take a racing car to numerous events in Europe and design it so that it is easily the fastest and the best transporter anyone has ever seen. But what could have been the motivation behind making something with so much devotion when the company knew that it had no commercial merit? What if they had just used a plain van? The story of creating the transporter has the elements of dignity, perseverance, and practicality. There was extreme rivalry going on between Mercedes Benz and the other German racing teams in the days preceding the First World War. However, W-154 powered by the V-12 that Mercedes came up with won 12 out of the 17 events right before the war, and stole everyone’s hearts. It wasn’t until 1952 that Mercedes Benz management made the decision to return to Grand Prix racing, beginning with the 1954 season.
To proclaim that it was back on the circuit, Mercedes made the transporter so that it would carry the W-196, a fresh model racing car with an Argentinean driver. The transporter had to be made so that it was distinctive, without any match in its class, and had to be easily acknowledged as a Mercedes Benz creation. It also had to be faster than all similar sized rigs as well as most of the cars that plied the highways of Western Europe.
If you got your car to the racetrack earlier than most, it meant that you got for yourself more practice time and more time for prep. This even gave a lot of extra time for repairs, and any other unforeseen eventualities. Technically, the transporter incorporated the best that Mercedes Benz had to offer. The 3.0 liter, 6-cylinder engine from the 300 SL models was incorporated as was their four speed manual transmission, but the frame was derived from the X-shape of the 300 S sedan. However, what was most remarkable was the carrier’s body work. The panels that were fitted on it were derived from other models that used to exist at the time. The doors and front glass, for example, were borrowed from the 180 sedan, as were most of the interior finishing’s. In total, it had the capacity to take loading ramps, two spare tires, tools, and other equipments for the racing car without any difficulty.
The single cab had been placed low and up front, far beyond the line of the front axle, and unconventional was this that it gave a defying, screaming, Mercedes Benz look in the end. It had a factory blue paint that just made it all the more popular. Although it had a maximum weight load of 6,600 pounds, the truck could carry it at speeds more than 100 mph with ease ? something that is a feat even by today’s practices.
The carrier was then on the road by the middle of 1954, and was a straight hit on the tracks of not only Europe, but America as well. The carrier was likely to pull more crowds at the races than the racers themselves. Following the tragic event at the 1955 French 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, in which a privately owned Mercedes Benz 300 SLR crashed and killed 80 people, the company actually pulled out of formula racing. The racing division was withdrawn ? along with the transporter ? before the year ended.
Even when the company wanted to keep it and its valuable load in their museum, they couldn’t because the weight was more than the floors could take. After receiving numerous letters and appeals, Mercedes Benz chose to start work on a replica of it in 1993. It was completed in 2000, after working with an outside fabricator, photographs and sketches. This meant that the transporter is now immortalised in the history of Mercedes Benz racing for all those who want to see it.
