There are patients that complain about a little sensitivity at the beginning or while the treatment is ongoing. This sensitiviy is not unbearable, and will not contine after treatment has been completed. However, if the sensitivity is unbearable, sensodyne toothpaste can be used to ease the sensitivity.
In addition to having a whitening treatment done by your dentist, there are products offered over the counter which are considered very safe. Unfortunately, these products results are debatable. Most of these products can get you a slight whitening effect and reduce some stains, however they generally won’t give you that lift in shade you’re looking for.
The better do-it-yourself kits are those with pliable mouth trays or with plastic strips. These give the user a custom fit, but can also be very expensive.
Avoid any type of staining agents for at least two weeks after undergoing whitening treatment. Cigarettes, tea, coffee, and red wine should be avoided. Make sure you contact your dentist if you feel any pain, increased sensitivity, or gum inflammation while undergoing treatment.
