Can someone tell me about Lance Armstrong?
I wanted to know about Lance Armstrong a bit for my school project.Would be thankfull if someone gave me a bit of insight in it.
Lance Armstrong is an American professional road racing cyclist who rides for UCI ProTeam Astana.
He won the Tour de France a record-breaking seven consecutive years, from 1999 to 2005. He is the only individual to win seven times, having broken the previous record of five wins, shared by Miguel Indurain, Bernard Hinault, Eddy Merckx and Jacques Anquetil.
He won the following award’s in his career:
1999-The American Broadcasting Company Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year.
2000-The Prince of Asturias Award in Sports.
2002-Sports Illustrated magazine named him Sportsman of the Year.
2002, 2003, 2004,2005-Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year.
2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006-ESPN’s ESPY Award for Best Male Athlete.
2003-BBC Sports Personality of the Year Overseas Personality Award
But the most inspiring thing about him is the way he fought testicular cancer, a tumor that metastasized to his brain and lungs in 1996. His cancer treatments that included brain and testicular surgery and extensive chemotherapy, and although his prognosis was originally poor.
On October 2, 1996, at age 25, Armstrong was diagnosed with nonseminomatous testicular cancer. The cancer had spread to his lungs, abdomen and brain. The standard chemotherapeutic regimen was BEP (Bleomycin, Etoposide and Cisplatin (or Platinol). Armstrong, however, chose an alternative, VIP (Etoposide, Ifosfamide, and Cisplatin), to avoid the lung toxicity associated with the drug Bleomycin. Armstrong had surgery on his brain tumors, which were necrotic, and an orchiectomy to remove his diseased testicle. After his surgery his doctor admitted that he had had less than a 20% survival chance.
Lance’s journey motivates me even more in my everyday life because 9 out of 10 people would had easily broken down and quit if they were in Lance’s shoes. He was only given a 20% chance of living! He not only got his life back but got his first love back, biking. It takes someone with true heart and determination to come back and do what he did, he’s never gonna be forgotten.
Some extracts from his autobiography ,”It’s Not About the Bike”:” Some of it is not easy to tell or comfortable to hear. I’m asking you now, at the outset, to put aside your ideas about heroes and miracles, because I’m not storybook material. This is not Disneyland, or Hollywood. I’ll give you an example: I’ve read that I flew up the hills and mountains of France. But you don’t fly up a hill. You struggle slowly and painfully up a hill, and maybe, if you work very hard, you get to the top ahead of everybody else. Cancer is like that, too. Good, strong people get cancer, and they do all the right things to beat it, and they still die. That is the essential truth that you learn. People die. And after you learn it, all other matters seem irrelevant. They just seem small.”
He even started The Lance Armstrong Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides support for people affected by cancer, in 1997. The LAF states that its mission is ‘to inspire and empower’ cancer sufferers and their families, under the motto “unity is strength, knowledge is power and attitude is everything“. The LAF also aims to provide practical information and tools for cancer sufferers in a, public health and research.
The sheer strength of human spirit can triumph over diseases like cancer and everything can be achieved.
