Are Avid Speed Dial levers really worth the hefty price?
I found SD 7s for like $50 a pair but I was originally looking for Ultimates… Are the Ultimates really worth the difference in price???
I actually know and use the equipment. lol. No, I don’t think they’re worth it unless you’re a weight weenie. They’re not super-appreciably lighter, and the weight you lose isn’t in a meaningful area of the bike anyway. If you’re looking to build up a super-light race bike for some reason, then have at it. For me, I prefer to save some cash and gain a slight bit of durability in a crash.
Check out online retailers and you can frequently find SD7′s for about $20, and the FR5 levers (I think that’s the model) for $11 to $15. It’s basically the same lever without the modulation adjustment. I don’t find that adjustment helpful anyway and I have 3 pairs of SD7′s, and a pair of Speed Dial Superlights as well.
You might also check out the Hayes levers. One of the previous nice advantages of Avid’s stuff was parts availability, but they did away with that when Sram took over. Hayes still offers parts if you brake a Lever Blade. It’s funny, too…..Avid used to market their “bend zone” on the lever, saying that it was good and prevented damage to the lever body or the handlebar, and that you could buy a new blade for like $7. When Sram bought them out, they did away with the spare blades, but kept that stupid “bend zone” and spun it to sound like it was still an advantage. lol. Still good levers but next time I need some I’ll probably pick up a different brand.
